The crispatula group is quite large, with C. crispatula var. balansae being most frequently seen. It is easily distinguished from other crispatula varieties by it strongly bullated leaves, that range from 2-4 cm wide and up to 60 cm long. This plant is requires a calcium rich environment, for a Cryptocoryne species. C. crispatula var. balansae can be distinguished from C. retrospiralis, by having purple to red striping on the limb, rather than spotting.
